The success of the meningitis C vaccination programme is an example of intervention to improve public health. During the 1990s there was an increasing number of deaths particularly in those under one-year-old and from 15 to 19 years of age. Overall occurrence of meningococcal disease across Newcastle has fallen from 37 cases and three deaths in 1999 to six cases and no deaths in 2002.
