Previously, dentists were able to budget for orthodontic treatment.However, under the contract introduced last April, they now have a fixedamount to spend each year. The reduction in treatment has beencompounded by the fact that some dentists who provided orthodontics inless complex cases have been given purely dental contracts.
A British Dental Association spokeswoman said that access to treatmenthas already been reduced. Only those most in need of treatment would nowget in on the NHS, reducing the number of children treated by up to afifth and leaving others on waiting lists that could last several years'she added.
