The conception rate in Newcastle has barely changed since figures werefirst collected for the teenage pregnancy strategy in 1998, falling by2.2 per cent. But the drop only represents four fewer girls conceiving.In 1998, 258 girls became pregnant but in 2005 this had fallen to 254.The rate peaked in 1999, when the strategy was launched, with 287 girlsconceiving. It has fallen steadily since.
