The Prime Minister appointed Alan Johnson as the new educationsecretary, Parmjit Dhanda as the new junior children's minister and JimKnight as the new schools minister. The children's sector welcomed theappointment of Johnson, who was previously trade and industry secretary,with some sources suggesting he was more sympathetic to the Every ChildMatters agenda than his predecessor Kelly.
Senior figures in sector were also optimistic about working with Dhanda,who only became an MP in 2001. Hilton Dawson, chief executive ofShaftesbury Homes & Arethusa and a former Labour MP, said: "I think hewill engage well with young people." But he added he was disappointed tolose Maria Eagle as junior children's minister, she takes up a juniorministerial position at the Northern Ireland Office. Sources at theDepartment for Education and Skills said the move was likely to delaythe green paper on looked-after children.
