As well as taking on the former children's responsibilities of theDepartment for Education and Skills, the new Department for Children,Schools and Families will lead on cross-department work on anti-socialbehaviour, child poverty and children's health. And, as revealed inChildren Now earlier this year, it will also lead on youth justicepolicy (Children Now, 7-13 February).
Children's secretary Ed Balls, who heads up the new department, said thedepartment would unite policy affecting children: "I will do my best todeliver for children, families and young people. We will continue todrive up standards in every school. And working with the Youth JusticeBoard there will be a new emphasis on preventing youth offending."
