Prime Minister Tony Blair was expected to announce a reshuffle of junior ministers late on Monday afternoon.
While there was uncertainty over Hodge's position, it was expected there would be a new school standards minister to replace Stephen Twigg and a new public health minister to replace Melanie Johnson. Both Twigg and Johnson lost their seats in the general election.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister completed his cabinet reshuffle at the weekend. Education secretary Ruth Kelly held on to her job while David Miliband was moved from the cabinet office to become minister for communities and local government, a newly created role in which he will be responsible for anti-social behaviour.
