A letter from Children's Secretary Ed Balls and Health Secretary Alan Johnson to PCT chairs confirms £340m of the extra £27.6bn Department of Health funding for PCTs from 2008 to 2011 is for disabled children's services. A total of £30m has been set aside for children's palliative care.
A separate letter to PCTs from chief nursing officer Christine Beasley and the director-general of NHS Finance sets out how the money should be spent.
The NHS is expected to fund short breaks for disabled children with complex health needs and their families to ensure they have the same opportunities as other disabled children. PCTs have also been asked to work with partners to ensure timely and comprehensive assessment of the needs of disabled children and fund the provision of community equipment.
