Campaign group Every Disabled Child Matters (EDCM) today published Disabled Children and Health, which reveals widespread confusion among primary care trusts (PCTs) about their role in supporting disabled children to lead ordinary lives.
The report highlights how disabled children are sometimes faced with inappropriate attitudes from health professionals including GPs and dentists while describing the entitlement to specialist equipment as a "postcode lottery".
The group is now calling on the government to ensure every local authority's spending on disabled children's services reflects national policy expectations.
It has also recommended that every PCT should have a named lead person responsible for services for disabled children, including children with complex health and palliative care needs, by December 2009.
