Brian Strutton, who is also joint chair of the School Support StaffNegotiating Body, told CYP Now that slashing staff training would have"serious implications" for pupils benefiting from additional support atschool.
His comments came after the government wrote to councils last weekconfirming grants from the Training and Development Agency for Schools(TDA) to local authorities for support staff training "will besignificantly reduced".
Strutton said the move risks undoing the good work of the past fiveyears. "The number of support staff and their role has expandedsignificantly to help teachers focus on their core responsibility ofteaching," he explained.
"Support staff have taken on many of the wider requirements of schools'such as mainstreaming special educational needs and the extension ofschools beyond the normal school day."
