It is the first project to be awarded money from the Young People's FundNational Grants Programme. Run by national charity Fairbridge, U16focuses on disadvantaged teenagers aged between 13 and 16 who wouldbenefit from a programme of support that reintroduces them to school orother mainstream training opportunities.
Many of the young people who will be targeted by the project facemultiple disadvantages. Emphasis is placed on building theirself-esteem, as well as developing their skills by providing them withhands-on experience of new activities.
A Fairbridge spokesperson said: "We provide informal learningopportunities. There is a lot of emphasis on motivation, self-esteem andconfidence building."
The project aims to engage with 3,000 young people. Many activities willtake place outside the classroom and will range from film-making tokayaking.
