Funding Watch: Who's getting money and who's giving it - Text to win and charities do too

Play projects will be the first beneficiaries of a new mobile phone lottery in London, which could generate thousands for children's charities and other good causes.

Londoners could soon be texting to win weekly minimum jackpots of 1,000 under the not-for-profit venture run by Million-2-1, a gambling company that launched an identical scheme in Manchester.

Mayor of London Ken Livingstone gave his backing to the London Lottery during National Playday, when he said funds should go towards improving children's play facilities.

Million-2-1's Manchester Lottery started in July, with most cash going to the Community Foundation for Greater Manchester, Christie's Against Cancer and Manchester Kids.

Simon Murphy, one of the company's directors, would not disclose how much charity money had been generated so far, but said the firm had been pleased with the public's initial response. He said Million-2-1 was in talks with media partners in the capital and hoped the London Lottery would be running by early next year.
