Funding watch: Who's getting money and who's giving it - Lotteryawards announce shortlist

A "science garden" that helps children under five explore nature through music is just one of the children's projects in the running for a national award.

The SoundGarden at the Halifax-based children's museum Eureka! wascreated with more than 3m of lottery funding. In the SoundGarden,children can create an animated butterfly, dress up as animals in a treetrunk den and play with singing flowers.

The project has been shortlisted for the National Lottery Awards 2006and will vie with initiatives from across the UK in a public vote.

Also shortlisted is Post Pals, a group founded by young people in Kentto support seriously-ill children by sending them letters and gifts.Another shortlisted organisation is Newcastle-under-Lyme and NorthStaffordshire's Play Council, which provides affordable playschemes.

Other children's projects in the running include a sports wall at WestWalton Primary School, Welsh arts project UCan for partially-sightedchildren, Seven Mill and Marion Richardson schools' efforts to encouragehealthy lifestyles, and Bolton-based Paws for Kids, which providesemergency pet care for families fleeing domestic violence.
