Ten schemes from 15 local authorities have received three years' worthof funding from the Local Enterprise Growth Initiative, a jointprogramme between the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, HM Treasuryand the Department for Trade and Industry.
The initiative, which is worth 300m up to 2009, aims to tacklepoverty by boosting local businesses and economies and helping peopleinto work.
St Helens in Merseyside was awarded 13.4m following a bid by thecouncil and local chamber of commerce. A multi-agency partnership inGreat Yarmouth successfully bid for 8.7m and one of its aims willbe "the development of an enterprise culture in local schools".
Alun Michael, minister for industry and the regions, said it was vitalto foster a "can-do attitude in every section of the community".
