Funding watch: Who's getting money and who's giving it - Questions over nurseries' cash

The Government says it is still working out how it will spend 16.8m on workplace nurseries.

The money was announced as part of this year's budget (Children Now, 29March-4 April). Chancellor Gordon Brown said the sum would be availablein the form of capital grants to help small and medium-sized businessesset up workplace nurseries for their employees. Half of the cash was tobe available during this financial year, 2006/07, with the rest beinghanded out in 2007/08.

However, the Department for Education and Skills says it does not yetknow how or exactly when the money will be allocated. A spokesman forthe department confirmed that none of the money had yet been spent andthat the Government was still deciding how to allocate it.
