Bids to a new government grant programme for voluntary organisationsworking with children and families came to 10 times more than the cashavailable, it has emerged.
The Department for Education and Skills last week announced the firstgrants from the Children, Young People and Families Grant Programme. Thedepartment revealed it had received more than double the number ofapplications expected.
More than 1,470 applications were made with bids totalling 178m,10 times more than the 17m pot. The programme brings togetherfive former funding streams and is intended to simplify the fundingprocess and boost the voluntary sector by offering more long-termsupport.
Funding was awarded to 65 organisations for 2006/07 in the form ofgrants for specific projects and strategic funding. The department hadintended to involve children and young people in deciding who should getcash but was forced to drop the plan after it was overwhelmed withapplications.
