Details of the funds, totalling 115m over two years, andallocations for individual authorities, have now been publishedalongside the follow-up to the green paper, Youth Matters: Next Steps(see news, p7).
The aim of the 62m Youth Opportunity Fund is to actively involveyoung people in awarding grants to youth activities, with a focus ondisadvantaged teenagers. The 53m Youth Capital Fund is designedto support capital or building elements of projects, including youthshelters, skate parks or IT equipment. However, the guidance stressesthat the ringfenced funding streams "must not be seen as a replacementfor the core funding of youth work".
The largest combined award of more than 1.4m went to Birmingham,which is one of seven authorities getting more than 1m.
