Funding Watch: The Barcapel Foundation

1 min read Education Health Youth Work

What is it? The Barcapel Foundation was set up following the sale of a pet food business by Scottish family firm Robert Wilson & Sons. It provides help mainly to charities, but sometimes makes awards to organisations and individuals with charitable aims. Its three priority areas of interest for funding are youth projects, health and heritage.

How much is on offer? Single donations do not usually exceed £100,000. All potential awards above £15,000 are assessed by a team independent from the foundation’s trustees.

What will it fund? For youth projects, donations can span all aspects of helping children and young adults, but the foundation is particularly keen to support those from socially and financially disadvantaged backgrounds. Charities, organisations, or individuals who try to motivate young people to fulfil their potential, and challenge them to exceed expectations, are encouraged to apply for funding. Barcapel has provided funding for organisations including the Anne Frank Trust, Sports Leaders UK, The Prince’s Trust and Fairbridge in Scotland.

The foundation does not support applications to fund travel, organisations or individuals promoting religious or political beliefs, or applications for funding feasibility studies.

When is the deadline? The board meets twice a year to discuss applications, in May and November. If an application is likely to be successful the trust will contact the applicant to request further information.
