Funding watch: The Hedley Foundation

1 min read Education
The Hedley Foundation is a charitable foundation set up by coal mine owners the Hedley family in 1971 using compensation from nationalisation. The foundation's main objective is the education, recreation, support, training, health and welfare of young people.

How much is available?

Most grants are one-off in nature for specific projects only and are usually up to a maximum of £5,000. However, the trustees sometimes agree to help fund the introduction of new and innovative projects with a series of up to three annual grants.

What will it fund?

The foundation makes grants to small charities working with young people aged between 11 and 25 in the areas of recreation, sport, training, health and welfare, support and outdoor education.

It is particularly keen on outdoor and adventure activities and the funding of appropriate kit and equipment. Small charities that can demonstrate achievement in preventing at-risk young people proceeding further down the pathway to custody are also favoured. A secondary aim is to assist small charities helping with disabled and terminally ill young people through funding for specialist equipment, organised respite breaks and holidays. The foundation also supports young carers and offers limited bursary-type funding to organisations that provide apprenticeships and specialist training for talented young people who are unable to develop their skills due to a lack of money. Only registered charities can apply.

When is the deadline?

Applications will next be considered on 17 September and 26 November.
