Food and drink: Ofcom offers junk food ad proposals

Ofcom has proposed three approaches to restricting junk food advertising.

The proposals, now out for consultation, aim to reduce the appeal offoods and drinks high in fat, sugar and salt to children.

The broadcasting watchdog's first suggestion is to ban ads for unhealthyfoods during programmes for and popular with children up to the age ofnine. Such products will also be prevented from sponsoring programmesfor children.

The second approach is stop all food and drink advertising andsponsorship in programmes for and appealing to children aged up to nine.The final option is to limit the amount of such advertising to 30seconds per hour in the day and one minute per hour in the evenings andweekend afternoons. The consultation ends in June.
