Families: Liverpool launches Somali project

A project to help Somali families in Liverpool develop their language skills in a bid to reduce disadvantage launched last week.

The Somali Mothers and Children Learning Together project is run by andfor members of the Somali community. Adults and children will be able togain and improve skills in writing English and Somali through theproject. It will also help parents gain a basic understanding of theNational Curriculum and education system.

Families can also take part in cultural activities involving drama,poetry and music. The project has received almost 148,000 fromthe Big Lottery Fund's Family Learning Programme.

Project organiser Faisa Ibrahim said: "The funding will go a long way toimprove the education of young children and parents who live in one ofthe most disadvantaged areas in Liverpool."
