NCB Now: Mental health project for families

A unique new project aimed at supporting families affected by parental mental illness has been launched in Greenwich, following a needs analysis undertaken by NCB.

The Cape (Children and Parents Empowered) project is a joint venturebetween Greenwich Council and Oxleas NHS Trust, funded by the Gatsbycharitable foundation.

The project was developed after NCB's analysis in Greenwich found thatparents with mental health difficulties and their children represented asignificant group in the borough.

With a seven-strong team already in place, the project offers a holisticapproach to supporting families through improving communication andjoint working between different agencies. Long-term targets includereducing the numbers of referrals to children and family services,emergency care placements of children and unplanned hospital admissionsof parents.

Speaking at the launch, Greenwich councillor Jackie Smith said: "Theproject will support parents and carers in their desire to provide thebest possible future for their children, and reduce the stress ofparenting."
