NCB Now: Seminars look at families' resilience

1 min read
The first of a new round of seminars on building resilience and supporting relationships in families took place at NCB on Tuesday 28 February.

The action learning seminars mark the second phase of an innovativeproject that aims to improve outcomes for vulnerable families.

Funded by the Parenting Fund, the project helps relevant professionalsto engage purposefully with parents and carers who have needs arisingfrom mental health difficulties or substance misuse.

The initiative brings together a mix of practitioners and managers fromchildren's and family services and specialist drug or alcohol services,as well as mental health professionals.

"During the project's first year we learned a great deal from promotingdialogue within such a diverse group of service providers," explainedEmma Sawyer from NCB's Family Support Unit, who is leading theproject.

"The single biggest issue raised by professionals was the difficulty inworking across both child and adult services. These services tend to behighly specialised and it is not the norm for families to be treatedtogether - yet a holistic approach could make all the difference insuccessfully balancing the needs of different family members."
