What Works?: Liverpool Working with families to tackle childhood obesity

1 min read
A partnership scheme to combat childhood obesity in Liverpool is helping transform children's lives by involving their families.

Getting Our Active Lifestyles Started (Goals) is a collaboration between Liverpool John Moores University, Liverpool Primary Care Trust, Liverpool City Council, the University of Salford and Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust, and an example of effective practice validated by C4EO.

The partners began developing the scheme in 2003 in response to growing concern about childhood obesity in the city and the support available to children already overweight and obese.

Goals sees children with weight problems attend weekly two-hour sessions with parents and siblings.

The programme, which runs on three different sites, is split into sessions for threeto seven-year-olds, eight to 12s and 13 to 16s. Each family is assigned a personal mentor who helps set weekly goals - which could include walking to school more often or eating fewer unhealthy snacks.
