Extended schools: DfES survey shows extension progress

One in 10 schools are already providing full extended services, according to a national survey commissioned by the Department for Education and Skills.

The poll of nearly 4,000 schools found that 12 per cent of primaries and10 per cent of secondaries are providing the "core offer" of childcareor activities for school-age children from 8am to 6pm, with supervisedtransport where necessary.

The Government wants to see all schools meeting the core offer by2010.

The survey found that most schools are providing some extended serviceswith 87 per cent of primaries and 95 per cent of secondaries offeringafter-school activities and childcare. Some 40 per cent of primaries and60 per cent of secondaries are offering before-school activities andchildcare.
