EU must lead the way on early years

Early Years
The European Union should take a stronger lead on developing early years services, the chief executive of charity Children in Scotland has said.

Bronwen Cohen told delegates at a Eurochild event at the EU Parliament in Brussels last week that a focus on early years would help wipe out child poverty and improve services.

Cohen said early years services not only provide care but offer stimulating, safe environments to encourage learning, healthy lifestyles and social inclusion, and help develop an understanding of citizenship.

She added Scotland could be a trailblazer in early years services. "But we shouldn't have to go it alone, which is why we are calling on the European Union to take the lead," she said.
