NCB Now: Eurochild focuses on poverty

1 min read
In this special European feature, Eurochild shares its outlook for the Belgian presidency of the EU.

From July, Belgium takes on the Presidency of the European Union.

The recent collapse of the Belgian government and announcement of elections is disappointing, but Belgium has managed before without a government in place and remains committed to keep the fight against child poverty at the heart of their agenda. Eurochild is working with the administration to ensure their programme continues with successful outcomes. By December, they hope to have a clear road map for the adoption of a recommendation on child poverty and wellbeing, and a reinforced Social Open Method of Co-ordination to strengthen member state co-operation on social issues.

As with its predecessor, Spain, Belgium has a strong social agenda for its presidency. Eurochild is pushing for a road map on a European Commission recommendation on child poverty. The necessary political process will be launched at the beginning of September with a child poverty and wellbeing conference.
