
And 2010 will be the European Year Against Poverty and Social Exclusion.
Why 2010? Because that was the landmark established by EU member states in 2000 as the date by which heads of state would commit to making "a decisive impact on the eradication of poverty".
The reality, of course, is that poverty is as widespread as ever, with growing numbers of people exposed to situations of extreme poverty and social exclusion. Undocumented migrants, including children, are just one example.
The European Year Against Poverty and Social Exclusion is therefore an opportunity for the EU to raise public awareness and understanding of poverty as a societal problem - not just as a problem of the poor.
