A Child's Place, published by the Green Alliance and think-tank Demos, says many children are afraid of their environment, so are less likely to be aware of wider environmental issues.
Gillian Thomas, a researcher at Demos and co-author of the report, said: "The current education strategy, which focuses on the more scientific side, would do better to open the school gates and allow more diversity."
The report sees a "big gap in equality" in access to high-quality natural environments between children in affluent rural and disadvantaged urban areas.
It warns that while extended schools can offer the chance to "imbed the idea of out-of-school learning", there is the risk that their focus on providing a range of services from one location could further exclude children who are alienated from school.
