Pupils are put off walking to school

Education Health
Children are keen to travel to and from school in a more environmentally friendly and active way but do not find it easy to do so, according to early findings of a study by the National Children's Bureau (NCB).

Researchers interviewed children from one rural and one urban secondary school, and their feeder primary schools, to understand more about their views on school travel.

Early findings suggest they want to walk and cycle to school and understand the health and environmental benefits of doing so, but are stopped by barriers such as a lack of clear routes. Some also said they were afraid of meeting strangers.

The NCB will now interview parents and teachers before creating a good practice guide.
