Education News: Ethnic minorities - Bangladeshi pupils leading the way

1 min read
Bangladeshi pupils are overcoming poverty and making more progress in school than other ethnic minority groups, according to an Ofsted report.

Although attainment of Bangladeshi pupils is below the national average, the report found that in the schools surveyed, Bangladeshi pupils did better than other pupils by the equivalent of four GCSE points. In Tower Hamlets, where 50 per cent of pupils are of Bangladeshi heritage, they do better than the London average.

Support to improve spoken and written English, adapting the curriculum to make it relevant to pupils and their heritage, and involving parents in school life were found to be vital ways of raising achievement.

"This report highlights the good work that is being done by schools to improve the education experience of Bangladeshi pupils, and their communities recognise and appreciate this," said David Bell, Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Schools.
