Education News: Ethnic minorities - Black pupils show GCSEimprovement

Ministers have cited new figures to show that policies to tackle under-achievement among ethnic minority pupils are delivering results. The latest breakdown of exam results shows that Black Caribbean pupils have improved their GCSE exam results more than any other ethnic minority group.

The figures reveal that the proportion of Black Caribbean pupilsachieving five or more A* to C grades increased by six per cent duringthe last year to 42 per cent.

The proportion of Black African pupils achieving five or more A* to Cgrades also increased by five per cent. Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshiand Chinese pupils all improved by more than three per cent, while Whitepupils improved by just under three per cent.

Schools minister Jacqui Smith said: "This is a great achievement andshows our policies to tackle under-achievement among minority ethnicgroups through initiatives such as Aiming High and London Challenge areboosting exam performance and helping year-on-year improvements."
