Run by environmental regeneration group Groundwork, Spring Gardens was set up to help local young people excluded from school who are experiencing serious learning and education difficulties to develop new skills and regain their self-confidence.
Valuable opportunities
Daniel Halder, 16, is one of the 60 young people who have already worked at the project. He started at Spring Gardens 18 months ago after being excluded from school. As well as giving his life some structure, Groundwork has helped him enroll on an Entry to Employment programme in landscaping so he can fulfil his ambition to become a professional gardener.
"It's one of the first times in my life that I have felt proud of what I've done," says Daniel. "When I see things grow that I've planted it makes me feel like the graft was all worthwhile. I've got more respect for the environment after seeing what happens on this allotment. I understand why it's important."
