About 1,200 delegates representing local government employees, including youth workers, voted overwhelmingly against new pay structures at Unison's recent annual conference in Bournemouth.
The union claims that the new pay structure proposed by the Joint Negotiating Committee (JNC) leaves employers open to legal action under the Equal Pay Act and Race Relations Act (YPN, 12-18 May, p4) .
Unison's national youth work officer, Colin Meech, said that although the union would not be calling for strike action, it would be encouraging members to pursue equal pay cases. "We are duty-bound to inform individuals of their statutory rights.
People don't realise the discriminatory position that currently exists, and the process of negotiation will uncover that," he said.
