Hope for youth work pay rise deal

1 min read Careers Youth Work
The Community and Youth Workers Union is hoping to be on the verge of settling an on going pay wrangle.

Doug Nicholls, general secretary of the union, will meet with the employers' side of the Joint Negotiating Committee (JNC) on 25 November to discuss the below inflationary pay rise. The employers' side represents local authorities across England.

Youth workers across the country have been offered a pay increase of 2.5 per cent. Nicholls said that inflation is around five per cent, meaning that the amount offered is not enough.

"These are professional workers and we want them rewarded professionally," Nicholls said.

He added that the fact local authorities were offering youth workers less cash than other staff was a "particular concern".

"Other packages for staff are worth more than what youth workers are being offered," he said. "This is at a time where the services of youth workers are even more in demand."
