Commentary

The importance of marriage was a key battleground in the 2010 election. Proposals around tax breaks for married couples, flexible working rights and equality for civil partnerships made it into the coalition agreement and became law. There are fewer proposals this time, with Labour focusing on boosting paternity rights and support for grandparent carers. The Tories have pledged to spend £7.5m on relationship counselling to protect and promote family stability. The Lib Dems' pitch is focused on housing in recognition of the increased shortage of affordable and public sector housing available.
