The Conservatives have championed uniformed youth groups and the National Citizen Service (NCS) and outline plans to boost both further. Labour backs NCS, but suggests reforms would be introduced so it achieves more long-term impact. Labour’s omission of statutory status for local authority youth services has caused disappointment among many who felt this is the only way to stem the year-on-year cuts to youth budgets. The Lib Dems also pledge to raise the profile of youth work and want to explore ways of promoting social action. Both they and Labour back votes at 16 as a way of raising the participation of young people in communities and social issues.
