Commentary

With all the parties committed to cutting the deficit over the course of the next parliament, all outline plans to make savings by reducing benefits for those out of work.

Under a Tory government, the maximum single household annual benefit total would fall from £26,000 to £23,000. The party also plans a number of changes on benefits for young people: jobseekers allowance (JSA) for 18- to 21-year-olds would be replaced with a system that restricted payments to six months, with any further benefits being linked to undertaking voluntary work in the community. The automatic right for 18- to 21-year-olds on JSA to claim housing benefit would also be removed.

Labour has pledged to replace JSA with a youth allowance, but it intends to link benefit payments to a young person undertaking training or education.

The Lib Dems focus more on developing discounts on services and transport for young people.
