Education White Paper: Councillors against proposed reforms

Councillors in charge of children's services in Labour-controlled authorities are overwhelming opposed to the Government's education reforms, according to a Children Now survey.

All the councillors in charge of children's services contacted byChildren Now said they felt the reforms would or could harm the EveryChild Matters agenda.

And 12 out of the 13 councillors surveyed said they were opposed to theproposals in the education white paper.

One of the councillors who took part in the survey - Jeanne Alexanderfrom the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham - said that the whitepaper did not embrace Every Child Matters.

"The local education authority should be involved in planning andresourcing new school provision where population change requires it,"she said.

Alexander also questioned the wisdom of putting parents in charge ofgoverning bodies.
