Education News: Education White Paper

Lord Kinnock joins attack on reforms Former Labour leader Lord Neil Kinnock became the latest key figure to attack the Government's proposals to overhaul the education system last week.

Speaking at the launch of a pamphlet by left-wing pressure group Compasssuggesting an alternative set of reforms, Lord Kinnock said the ideas inthe education white paper would "shatter" the education system.

"It is a distraction from what must be the primary task - givingincessant, undivided attention to the potential and performance withinschools," he said.

The pamphlet, A Comprehensive Future: Quality and Equality for All OurChildren, accuses the Government of being "beguiled by the chimera ofchoice" and calls for local authorities to have full control over schooladmissions and for selection by ability or faith to be stopped.

Opposition among Labour MPs continued to mount last week. To date, morethan 90 Labour MPs have threatened to vote against the proposed reforms, more than enough to wipe out Tony Blair's parliamentary majority.
