Education News: Vulnerable children - Academy plans free boardingplaces

The first academy school to offer free boarding for vulnerable children is due to open next year, according the senior official in charge of the academies programme.

Sir Cyril Taylor, chairman of the Specialist Schools and AcademiesTrust, said that Kingshurst City Technology College in Birmingham wouldconvert to an academy and build accommodation for 100 boarders. A fifthof the school's places would be reserved for children in care.

He told a conference of head teachers: "I am proposing we set a goalover a three-year period that at least 10 per cent of looked-afterchildren have the possibility of a boarding school place."
