Children Now can reveal the Government's drive to expand the stateboarding sector will begin with the creation of around 1,000 extraplaces by the end of 2006. Social workers and education welfare officerswill be called on to find children to fill the extra places and theywill be given training to help them discharge their newresponsibilities.
To begin with, many of the places will be created in existing stateboarding schools. But in the long-term, ministers are considering addingboarding provision to some city academies. Ministers are also looking atgiving successful and popular schools the option to build in boardingcapacity.
The proposals have been prepared by the Specialist Schools Trust and theState Boarding Association. They have already been submitted toministers and an announcement is expected before the end of theyear.
