Education: London to get state boarding school

Plans have been drawn up for the first new state boarding school in 40 years.

It is envisaged that there could be a boarding wing at a 15m academy, which is due to open in Southwark, south London, in 2008. The places would be provided free of charge for children who had problems at home.

A spokeswoman for Southwark council said the plans were being discussed with Aylwin Girls School, which the academy will replace.

She said there could only be "a handful" of boarding places.

Labour's election manifesto pledges more boarding schools as a way of helping the most disadvantaged children (Children Now, 20-26 April).
