Education News: Trust schools - Pathfinder projects seek outsidehelp

Fifty schools have been awarded trust school status, ministers announced last week. Most of the schools will group to form 28 pathfinder projects.

The projects will now search for outside partners that could control thegoverning body, but do not have to provide financial backing.

Four projects have secured outside partners, with one school linking upwith Microsoft.

Education secretary Alan Johnson said: "The pathfinder projects areabout using the ideas, energy, and talent in voluntary groups, charities, universities and business foundations to help more youngpeople fulfil their potential."

But the National Union of Teachers reiterated its concern that thesponsors would control the schools. The union's general secretary SteveSinnott said: "Trust schools take power away from parents andteachers.

Instead, the sponsors - who may come from any extremist group or none -will be in charge."
