Graham Chapman, the councillor responsible for education in Nottingham, one of the local authorities that successfully bid for new funding, said extended schools linking with health and social care wouldn't happen without this money.
"For Nottingham, it will mean putting schools at the heart of the city's regeneration, not only providing our children and teachers with classrooms worthy of them and designed to stimulate enthusiasm, but also setting schools at the centre of their local communities," he said.
More than 200 schools across 20 local authorities will benefit from an additional 4.4bn in the second and third stages of the Building Schools for the Future programme. Individual figures have yet to be released.
