Education News: Special needs - Scottish ruling may diminishchoice

Children with special needs in Scotland could have less choice of where they go to school following a legal ruling.

Jessica McArthur's parents wanted to send her to the private Royal BlindSchool in Edinburgh, but instead were offered a place at Oaklands, astate school.

At appeal, the presiding judge, Lord Glennie, ruled against the parents'saying that when Edinburgh Council compared the schools, it should onlytake into account the additional cost to Oaklands if McArthur were to gothere.

Glennie said if Edinburgh Council had used this approach, the case forsending McArthur to Oaklands would have been even stronger.
