Education News: Special needs - Government faces exclusioncriticism

A Labour MP has criticised the Government for failing to find out what happens to children with special educational needs that are excluded from school.

Gordon Marsden tabled parliamentary questions asking what percentage ofchildren with special educational needs were excluded from school, andwhat percentage of those children were readmitted afterwards. ButDepartment for Education and Skills officials said they were unable toprovide a full answer because the information is not held centrally.

Marsden told Children Now: "Some of the statistics that would beextremely helpful are not available. It points to the fact thathistorically the issue has been a little low down the food chain. Thefigures would show us whether these children enter a downward spiralonce they are excluded from school. I think it is very concerning thatthe department is not monitoring this."
