Education News: Special needs - Councils ignoring parentalservices

Councils have been accused of failing to engage with local services set up to help parents and carers of children with special educational needs.

A major evaluation of the special educational needs parent partnershipservices in England was published last week by the Department forEducation and Skills.

It found that that while parent partnership services are valued byparents and enhance local special educational needs provision andservices, local authorities are "not all equally persuaded of thebenefits of such services".

Researchers found that that information sharing between localauthorities and parent partnership services is problematic for themajority of services, with one in five experiencing major problems, often because of "relationship issues".

Their report concluded: "Local authorities need to play a much moreproactive role in ensuring that schools and other agencies are fullyaware of the purpose and value of parent partnership services."
