Education News: Special needs - Gloucester school loses closure battle

Children with special educational needs in Gloucester have lost a long-running battle to keep their school open.

Alderman Knight Special School in Tewkesbury will close in August 2006, the Office of the Schools Adjudicator has ruled.

The decision follows a campaign against closure backed by thousands of the town's residents. Last year, nearly 27,000 people voted against the closure of the school in a referendum organised by the town council (Children Now, 17-23 November 2004).

The adjudicator's report said: "There are currently 70 surplus places at Alderman Knight and it is estimated that by September 2006 the surplus places will rise to 92. This means there are serious doubts about the viability of the school post 2006 both in educational and financial terms."
