Euan Robson, the deputy minister for education and young people, also told MSPs that all employees in independent schools are subject to the same child protection measures as in state-run schools.
James Douglas-Hamilton, the Scottish Conservatives' education spokesman, had placed an amendment to the School Education (Ministerial Powers and Independent Schools) Bill to require that all employees of independent schools, not just teachers, would satisfy child protection criteria. He was concerned that the Bill only refers to proposed teachers.
But Robson said the Protection of Children (Scotland) Act 2003 covered anyone working at any school.
