The scheme will help bolster the Children Missing in Education projectthat was launched last year to help find children who have disappearedfrom the education system. It follows the murder of five-year-oldDanielle Reid in 2003, which highlighted the risk of services losingtrack of vulnerable young children when families move home.

Deputy education minister Robert Brown said: "It's extremely importantthat key pupil information can be shared quickly and effectively betweenauthorities.

"These unique numbers will improve existing procedures, helping toensure that our children are kept safe and well."
